Down in the blades of grass: November 2014

It is halfway through the month and almost time for 30 minutes in the Life, and I wanted to get mine done early.  Life changes for me as of tomorrow.  For the longest time I have worked 2 days in the office, 2 days from home.  My home hours have always been less than my office hours.  That has allowed me to have the freedom to get up in the morning and go for a walk, or work early and walk in the afternoon. From tomorrow, I up my hours of work, and I drive 1 hour each way to the office 4 days a week.  I am not really a morning person.  I like late nights and late mornings.  It sure is going to be fun.

This weekend was quiet.  I have been having a few serious issues with my feet. It appears that I have a Morton's Neuroma in my left foot and the way I have compensated walking has caused an issue in the heel.

So Sunday afternoon I decided not to walk but rather to go out on the back canal, sit quietly for 30 minutes and see what was going on in the world of critters.  Not much, I'm afraid.  Just my Great Blue Heron looking for food. While the ducks and the squirrels are fed, he has to catch his own.

So while I was sitting waiting for him to do something I started to look around me.  Now something you will not know about me is that I have a real love for the mythical - fairies, goblins, orcs etc.  I love the Lord of the Rings and I am making sure that I get to see the Hobbit as soon as the December episode comes out at the cinema.

I grew up on stories.  My father would read to us when we were young children, Rabbit Hill, Tom Sawyer, Huckleberry Fin.  Our English friends will get me when I say I delved into the world of Enid Blyton.  I love the Magic Faraway Tree, and the Wishing Chair. I wanted to be part of the Famous 5 and if not them, then the Secret 7.  I took a year to read Lord of the Rings, and that was in the days when the print was tiny and the book was big.  I could not stay out of Duncton Wood and the lives of the moles that inhabited the United Kingdom.

So as I was sitting on the grass, I decided to look around.  What could I see in the world of the blades of grass?  I did not have my macro lens on because I was supposedly watching my Great Blue Heron, but I did have my zoom. Perhaps in the world that is sometimes pesky for home owners, live the fairies and friends under the leaves of tiny tiny little plants.  Wander through the blades of grass and see what I got to see when I got down on the ground.

Still within my 30 minutes I glanced back up to find my Great Blue Heron stalking it's catch. Sadly I think it was a baby turtle.  But since I am not feeding him I guess he has to eat.

Next time you are sitting on the grass, look around, look down.  What are weeds to some, are mana to the insects, the bees, and the butterflies.  The flowers are so pretty and colorful. And, perhaps if you get up real close you may find a little person hanging out down there.

When weeds go to Heaven,

I suppose they will be flowers.

    1. Thank you Colleen. I have got down really close with my macro and I may do that again sometime but one of my favorite spots is out on the grass out back, and right now everyone's gardens are full of these tiny little blooms.

    1. Thank you Mary, I am not sure why my dad came to mind this month, but this last week I walked in my house to something cooking in the oven and it smelt like it used when I went for dinner with my mom and dad. My parents encouraged our reading and imagination and I am grateful to them for that.

    1. Wouldn't that be cool Sophie to find an Ent Wife. I loved those old trees in Lord of the Rings. I cannot wait for the Hobbit to come out in December. Hopefully I can get to see it before surgery but if not then I will have to figure out going to the movies with a sore foot :)

  6. Gorgeous set of images Sharleen! I just love the reasons behind them too - my absolute favourite books as a child were by Enid Blyton, I've just read The Magic Faraway Tree to my younger girls, so I can totally relate! These photographs just ooze magic!! Bravo!

    1. I loved the Saucepan Man, and vague recollections of the Land of Smacks. I need to pull out those books and read them again. Maybe I will have a Enid Blyton Fest while stuck in bed. I have held onto my whole collection of Noddy as well. If you have not read them the Wishing Chair, do so. I always wished I had a chair that could fly. Thank you for your kind comments.

  7. Beautiful! I just love your stories and, of course, your photography. The heron shots are my favorites. They are such majestic birds.

I wanted to tell you that I also have a neuroma which has led to heel pain. My advice to you is to NOT have the surgery. I did and it was so painful and then did not stop the problem. I talked to several people afterwards who said the same thing. Now I stick with Cortizone shots and Naproxen.

Good luck to you as you adjust to your new work schedule and thank you for sharing nature's beauty.

    1. Thank you - the Heron is one of my favorite critters as well although just after finishing up my two blogs it disappeared. It has been sitting on our back canal for 2 months, and the week I gave it a name it left. I could not believe that. If you ever have the opportunity to see them do a courting dance it is a sight to behold. I have a blog from last year where I captured that. We are heading into the season and I am already seeing one or two doing that. Perhaps Big Blue has gone a-courting. Re the foot. I have already had a couple of shots and the docs do not want to give me any more. I am at a point where I know that the surgery will not heel all the problems but it may help one of them.

  8. I always love coming to your posts. You are an incredible nature photographer and do so much more than cataloging, your images are full of heart and stories. We have herons in Istanbul living in nests high up in the plane trees in Gülhane Park. There is a cafe there where you can sit and crane your neck to see them but I never see them close like this . Just wonderful to see. I love the quotes too. We really struggle with our life here but try all the time to love the weeds. Thanks so much sharing.

  9. Thank you so much Julie. Moving to another country is hard but when you are in a place that is so different and you don't necessarily speak the language it is so much harder. Weeds have a way of going unnoticed until you get really close to them. I hope that things improve for you.
